FAQ / Frequently Asked Questions

Schuette® Pleated Blind Made to Measure without Drilling • Suprafix Mounts “For glueing” • Honeycomb Collection: Ocean Drive (Light blue) • Profile color: Oak

What is a honeycomb pleated blind?

Simply put, a honeycomb pleated blind is a so-called double pleated blind, as it is two pleated blind fabrics hanging one behind the other. Of course, the manufacturing process for honeycomb pleated fabrics is actually much more complex (and rightly so): for example, the two pleated fabrics are also welded together in a special way, creating the honeycomb cell shape that can be seen from the side view. The front "pleated fabric" also differs in shape and color from the rear "pleated fabric". Although a honeycomb pleated blind has a lot in common with a conventional pleated blind, it differs significantly in terms of performance.

What is the difference between a honeycomb pleated blind and a pleated blind?

The biggest difference between a honeycomb pleated blind and a pleated blind, which is immediately recognizable at first glance, is the shape of the fabric. A honeycomb pleated blind has a double layer of fabric, which from the side looks like a row of stacked hexagons (different: honeycombs, from honeycombs or beehives). In contrast, a pleated blind looks like a zig-zag pattern from the side. This visual difference is clearly reflected in a difference in performance.

Does the pleated blind darken rooms completely?

Our blackout pleated blind achieves the maximum possible room darkening that is possible with a tensioned pleated blind. No light passes through the fabric and the drill holes run inside the cell and are not visible. Light can only enter the room through light gaps on the sides of the honeycomb pleated blind.

Are honeycomb pleated blinds always blackout?

No. There are also honeycomb pleated blinds with translucent fabrics.

Do darkening honeycomb fabrics let no sunlight through at all?

Our honeycomb structures are designed not to let light through at a light intensity of 30,000 lux. The light intensity in normal daylight is generally below this value, e.g. a light intensity of less than 10,000 lux is achieved in winter when the sky is overcast and about 20,000 lux in summer when the sky is overcast. In unfiltered, direct sunlight, the luminous intensity can exceed 30,000 lux. In such cases, some light may shine very weakly through the fabric at the points where the honeycomb cells are glued together. The light then shines diffusely through the fabric at these points and has only a very low light intensity. Even in such cases, the blackout performance of the honeycomb fabric is > 99%.

Can you look into the apartment from outside at night when the light is on?

No! There is no question that honeycomb pleated blinds can achieve thermal blackout. They do not allow any light or glances through and offer maximum privacy and maximum room darkening.

Can I save energy with the pleated blind?

Yes, you can save energy and therefore money with our pleated blackout blinds. The blackout honeycomb fabrics do not let any light through and can keep up to 2/3 of the sun's heat out of the room. Whether honeycomb pleated blinds offer thermal insulation can therefore be briefly and concisely rounded off with a Yes: In summer, you need to cool less and in winter, the pleated blind reduces rapid heat loss from the window. The room therefore retains a pleasant temperature for longer, there is no need for additional help and this saves electricity.

What is the difference between a thermal pleated blind and a honeycomb pleated blind when it comes to saving energy?

A thermal pleated blind is equipped with opaque fabrics that have a heat protection finish to increase light reflection and at the same time reduce light transmission and light absorption. However, daylight should still pass through the fabric so that rooms remain usable for various applications without having to use artificial light sources, e.g. living and working in the living room and study. A real pleated blackout blind is primarily intended to darken a room. As the fabric does not let any light through at all, it also keeps heat out of the room in summer and in the room in winter. Anyone who has already had experience with honeycomb pleated blinds can confirm the difference to conventional thermal pleated blinds. Once a honeycomb pleated blind, always a honeycomb pleated blind!

How do you clean honeycomb pleated blinds?

Cleaning and caring for honeycomb pleated blinds is not too different from cleaning normal pleated blinds. If the fabric on the window side also has a shiny silver thermal coating, the honeycomb pleated blind should only be lightly wiped with a cloth and not completely submerged in water. The honeycomb cells on the inside of the honeycomb pleated blind must also be dusted. This can seem tedious with very wide pleated blinds. But with a little tip, it can be done without any problems: ☞ Simply hold a vacuum cleaner to one end of the honeycomb cells and suck up the dust cell by cell. Alternatively, you can also use a hairdryer to blow the dust out. However, it is essential to use cold air here so that the honeycomb fabric is not damaged.

Which is better pleated or honeycomb pleated blinds?

Neither. Rather: depending. The choice between pleated blinds and honeycomb pleated blinds depends on your own needs and requirements for window privacy and sun protection, as well as your budget: Price: A major advantage of pleated blinds is that they are inexpensive compared to honeycomb pleated blinds. Design variety: If you are looking for a window decoration, the very wide range of colors and patterns of pleated blinds also offers a greater choice than honeycomb pleated blinds. Care: Neither can simply be thrown into the washing machine, but with honeycomb pleated blinds the cells also have to be dusted on the inside, so this point goes to the simple pleated blind by a narrow margin. Pleated blind darkening: Whether a pleated blind or honeycomb pleated blind darkens better depends on the fabric used, because a completely opaque pleated blind darkens just as well as a completely opaque honeycomb pleated blind. Insulation: The honeycomb pleated blind wins by far here thanks to its unique honeycomb cell shape. The honeycomb cells form an insulating layer against heat, cold and noise.

Are honeycomb pleated blinds useful?

Whether honeycomb pleated blinds are useful or even more useful than simple pleated blinds is a matter of opinion. In general, honeycomb pleated blinds are definitely useful as protection against heat and cold and for noise reduction. In addition, Schuette® honeycomb pleated blinds are undoubtedly useful as pleated blackout blinds, as they are 100% opaque.

What size should I choose if my dimensions are 76.3 cm x 139 cm (width x height)?

That depends on the fixing method. If you choose a pleated blind without drilling with a clamp, you can cover the entire window glass plus an overhang on all sides. If you choose a pleated blind with adhesive holder or a honeycomb pleated blind with drilling, which is mounted in the glazing bead, then the pleated blind is mounted closer to the window glass and covers the glass surface. We manufacture our pleated blinds in the finished size ordered. The width ordered (e.g. 80 cm) corresponds to the actual width of the pleated blind. The height is the total height of the pleated blind. The tension cords are adjusted to the ordered height.

What is the best fastening for the pleated blind?

A pleated blind is closed every evening, opened again in the morning and adjusted to the desired position. This makes it one of the most frequently moved pleated blinds. For a pleated blind that is operated frequently, a particularly firm and stable fixing is very important. For this reason, we recommend our particularly sturdy premium clamp bracket "For tightening" for pleated blinds without drilling. This clamp can be tightened again and again with the supplied wrench if it has become loose over time due to frequent use. However, the firmest, most stable and most permanent way of attaching a pleated blind to a window is always to screw it in, although this requires drilling. For pleated blinds with drilling, we offer two screw fixing options: with mounting plates in the glazing bead or with angle brackets ("Double 2in1") in front of the glazing bead.

What is a glazing bead?

The glazing bead on a window is the small frame that holds the window pane and the rubber seal in position. On PVC windows and metal windows, this strip is hollow and can be drilled (also on wooden windows). A window fitter who wants to change a pane of glass will remove these glazing beads in order to access the pane. Glazing beads can be reordered as spare parts.

The glazing bead on my window is beveled, can I install pleated blinds there?

Yes, you can. Each Schuette® Honeycomb pleated blind for gluing is supplied with four adhesive holders including adhesive plates. To be able to stick pleated blinds and honeycomb pleated blinds, the glazing bead should be at least 18 mm deep. This leaves sufficient space between the glass pane and the pleated blind fabric for air circulation and heat dissipation, which is particularly important for pleated blackout blinds. As a general rule, you should always make sure that the entire adhesive plate is in contact with the window during adhesive installation, as this maximises the adhesive surface and therefore the hold. Although this will not usually be completely possible with bevelled glazing beads due to the slope, pleated blinds can still be glued to bevelled glazing beads if the brackets are positioned correctly. Just make sure that the majority of the adhesive surface touches the window.

Are all the parts required for assembly included?

Of course they are. What's more, no tools are required for assembly!

How do I measure for sloping glazing beads?

We recommend measuring the width slightly differently when installing for gluing and drilling on very slanted glazing beads that widen considerably into the room. As the width ordered corresponds to the actual pleated blind width, more light can shine through at the sides when using the conventional measurement in combination with heavily slanted glazing beads. To minimize this light incidence, the pleated blind should cover both the glass pane and the rubber seal as well as a small part of the slanted glazing bead if the glazing bead is very slanted. If you want to glue or screw the pleated blind into the glazing bead, you can follow the example below: Measure the width at half the depth of the glazing bead and do not subtract anything from it. This width dimension is then the order dimension. Please measure the width at several points on the glazing bead.

Is this pleated blind also a Chinese blind that takes 30 minutes to assemble?

No. This is a quality product that has been specially developed. We value your time and your "home" too much, so the pleated blind is assembled as far as possible to ensure safe transportation.

Can the brackets withstand pleated blinds with large dimensions?

Yes, all our brackets are subjected to regular tests and are designed to work perfectly even with the maximum dimensions.

Are pleated blinds suitable for the bathroom or kitchen?

Our pleated blind fabrics can be used in damp rooms.

Is it possible to order free fabric samples?

Please contact our customer service to receive fabric samples of our pleated blinds, roller blinds & curtains and other home textiles. You only pay the smallest possible shipping fee plus 0.01 euro (1 cent) per fabric sample so that our system doesn't go crazy.

Can I change from one Suprafix bracket to another?

The brackets are designed so that they can be easily replaced with other Schuette® brackets if necessary. Please contact our customer service for further information, as changes may need to be made to the pleated blind dimensions.
